Work as PMHNP & staff RN on the side

Do PMHNPs work as an RN in another specialty on the side sometimes? For example if you work in the ER as an RN, then become a PMHNP and do PMHNP full or almost full time then still do some ER shifts. Though I know its possible, is it generally done and realistic?

Also:

Would employers look that you are a PMHNP and frown upon you working in another area as an RN?

Are there highest license liability issues (like not taking an RN as a tech because they would be responsible for things falling within the realm of their license)?

I know there are not a lot of PMHNP's here, but even if you've heard something I would appreciate the response.

I wouldn't do it because I make twice as much as a NP and my hospital colleagues are now PAs and Docs so I feel it would negatively effect my credibility. If you want to continue working in the ED why don't you get your post master's FNP or ACNP and get a job as a NP in the ED?

yes, you can do as you please. Work as RN AND NP elsewhere. I have a staff nurse on my psych unit who is also an psych NP at her other job. Don't ask me why shes doing both. *shrugs*

I would say if thats what you want then go ahead as long as you remain within your scope of practice. You are probably tired of school but you could go back to become a FNP or adult NP since you already have some of the core classes. Best wishes.
