Work from home RN jobs? Pros and Cons?

Hi Everyone,

I've been feeling lately (well for a couple of years at least) that I really need a change. Currently working in school nursing, but don't know how much longer I can take it. Considering a work from home type of job. I like having off when my kids are off, but would want more money and more flexibility with my schedule. I would really want more money than what I am making now, and am OK with not having summers off, but would like to do something part-time possibly. I've looked into certifications (HCS-D, HCS-O, case management, etc.) but am really not sure which route to take. Even debated grad school, but do not feel like my heart is into wanting to become and NP. I'm just at the point where I'm feeling lost and stuck. And as I look into available positions, I feel like the past few years that I've been working as a school nurse don't really add much to my resume clinical-wise.

So my question is- if you work from home, what do you do? Do you have set hours, or is your job based on productivity and can you work the hours you want as long as your work is done? Did you have to work in a hospital or office setting before having the opportunity to work remotely? And is you a salaried or hourly employee?

Sorry for so many questions, I just figured this would be a great place to start in trying to make an informed decision on how to proceed.

Thanks in advance!

I work from home making post discharge calls to patients to see how they've been doing since they left the hospital. We have a survey that we follow. If there is an issue, he have email and phone contacts for the hospital. I have set work hours. And since people are constantly being discharged, we never run out of week. I previously worked both for a hospital and nursing home. But everyone's background on our team has a unique background. The pay is hourly.

Is this through a specific hospital or through an agency such as an insurance company?

I work for a company that outsources various telehealth roles for hospitals and clinics in the US and abroad. Floor nurses don't have time to answer phones and triage patients. So that's where we come in. We provide both clinical (triage, post discharge follow-up,  preoperative calls, med refills) and non clinical (appointment scheduling) services.

Do you mind sharing what company you work for?

Sure. The name of the company is RelateCare. They advertise on Indeed.com. Nurses with a license in either OH, FL, CA, NC, WI, MN, MI, MA, or a compact license to the front of the line! LOL.

Did you ever find a work from home job? I recently started a WFH position. It’s definitely different I work M-F 7-3:30 but my schedule will change once I’m done training. Pros not having to experience the pre shift anxiety while working in the hospital. Being at home and getting to do your job and clock out without feeling like did I forget to chart x, y and z?

I guess it depends on the individual. I am enjoying it while I can. These jobs are hard to come by.

@HoneyBee723 Hi ! Are you still with RelateCare? If so, can you message me? I received an offer from them and had a few questions before accepting the position.

Thank you for responding! Is it a lot of phone time or stressful ? I’m expecting and wanted to try remote nursing but am hearing mixed reviews about the company and job. It would only be part-time for me.

It's nothing but phone time. LOL. That's just the nature of telehealth. Yes, at times it can be stressful. But my personal experience is that the stress of talking to patients on the phone is nowhere near as stressful as the typical day on the floor. If you have a difficult patient on the phone, you are done with them once you complete the call - unlike the floor where you may be with them 12 hours.

The company is still young and growing. The culture is pretty laid back. I think everyone is pretty nice. And I have a great team. I wouldn't go back to the floor even for agency money. It's safe to say that I'm spoiled. LOL. Do you know what account you interviewed for?

? okay ?. My other option is Health Coach Consultant and that job description doesn’t seem as stressful and I’ll be able to control the workflow a little better since it’s outbound calls instead of incoming.  I was just told that we’ll be answering the phone for Duke Hospital until they come back on. I chose Sat and Sun schedule since the hours are better but of course shift preference isn’t guaranteed and I wouldn’t have a set schedule. Any other situation would be fine, but not sure if it’ll work with a newborn LOL.

It was a pleasure speaking with you! Trying to get some more info before making a decision. Big changes on the way ?. Thank you for answering my questions.
