wondering about oncology clinic job

Specializes in inpatient rehabilitation.

Hi all,

I am currently working in rehab at a hospital and am a newer nurse (8 months) and not happy in my current job, looking for a change. There is a new cancer center being built in my area and was thinking about applying for an oncology clinic job. I'm not sure what my job duties would be. If anyone works in this type of job and can give me advice that'd be great! thanks a bunch.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Oncology.

I'm an oncology nurse working in a cancer unit in a large hospital for almost 2 years. I would love to work in an onc clinic.....but, if your area is anything like mine, the offices and clinics are not interested in hiring a "rookie." They want a highly experienced nurse who has acquired vast and thorough background and experrtise in dealing with oncology patients. That background comes from working in a hospital oncology unit. If you are seriously interested in being an oncology nurse, I strongly advise you to start in the hospital onc environment.

I am hoping after a couple more years in the hospital, I'll be able to move over to an office / infusion center setting.

In the clinic I work in the RN is responsible for Port and IV accessing, lab drawing, and chemo administration, and injections. They are generally assigned certain pts for the day and follow their schedule. They are a great crew.
