well, we got word our survey will be tomorrow. Sort of an unofficial heads up.... This is not JC, but their competition... DNV. Another accredidation organization.
But it seems like everyone dumps on the med surg floor.... The *Team* that goes thrugh before the survey team talks about the wheel chairs, stands, geri chairs, junk, ect that is stored in this shower room we don't use.... they tell us our floor needs two shower rooms, and the junk has to go. Do they offer to help move the junk? no. We don't have a storage room at all, since we lost rooms for a temporary clinic moving in..... no storage room.... can't put stuff in the halls... no one helps you find a place to put it.
then you start looking arround.... its like people are out to fail! paper signs on doors--don't open, broken equipment. really? is that how we do it? A big shipping crate in the hall, marked *do not move--needed to ship wound vac back in* again...really? in the hall...on the floor? I called materials management and said to come get it....they refuse. So I hauled it down and put it in the Materials managers office. come on. you just leave the box on the floor outside the patients room till they are done with a rented wound vac?
I had been on our computer guys for months about privacy screens and infection control antimicrobial keyboards.... oh, they purchased them. And all of them sat in the IT department on a shelf. So its my job to swap out all the keyboards, mice and put up all the privacy screens?
not exactly a team effort. we will need luck!

Hi Cathy, Aren't you lucky to know that tomorrow is the day!! We are expecting them "anytime" now that the "window is open". We can't accept admissions till they re-inspect us. Isolation and infection control issues are crucial, but they can always find other things to pick on. In addition to many many inservices, I have instructed my staff to try to relax and not be nervous wrecks. We will be polite and respectful to the surveyors. Please let us know how your facility makes out......Good luck and Best Wishes!
good for you talking to staff. One of my big gripes is that upper management knows all the answers...but the surveyers ask the lower working stiffs the questions! let us know how you want the questions answered, and tell us to relax!

If your upper management hasn't coached you on answering questions, then relax and answer the questions truthfully. What the hell is upper management for if they aren't managing their facility and dealing with stupid stuff like detritus in the hallways and HIPAA issues? I don't get why the burden falls on the shoulders of the nursing staff. Low hanging fruit theory? Possibly, but national surveyors aren't so stupid that they can't see what's going on and what is not.
