1/29 and 2/5 WILTW: Teachable Moments Are Priceless

Published

The past two weeks have been filled with being the educator and the student, sometimes at the same time.

The WILTW 1/29 had me in a simulation situation as a charge nurse, which was something I haven't done in 2 years and I learned that I could be capable in this position if needed, which was very unexpected, although I'm not enthusiastic about being a charge nurse ever.

I also have been shying away from any supervisory positions; most likely due to my comfort level of being in a knowledgeable position, yet still needing necessary education to advance to a level where I'm not as much as a beginner; in my department the need to be closer to that position is well supported, which is a change from last year, and one that I have come to terms with that I can be fully supported in a new speciality in a new phase of my career.

The end of this week had me back in the educator position; allowing me additional feedback on focusing on goals, and giving essential feedback that has assisted me in tailoring how effective my educational material can be; it also had me willing to support new nurses understand the daunting task of critical care; it reminded how daunting it was for me and how I needed support and was extremely supported in this environment.

This week presented me more union rep responsibilities; being a in Grievance position presents how important is to know the process of policies and procedures, and also how an employee needs to understand the process of what their rights are.

Next week will explain my WILTW on representing the grievance process.

Until next week...what have you learned?

I have learned that when dealing with a code brown, it doesn't pay to lean too far over the patient.

Loose clothing isn't helpful, either.

I am currently 35 weeks pregnant & feel like I'm going to explode! Last week when I saw my OBGYN we discussed induction & decided since I have gestational diabetes & gallstones I will be induced on 3/9. That day can't get here soon enough!

The pain from my gallstones is worse than any pregnancy pain. At this point with the baby getting so big I am sick 99.9999999% of the time. My back will ache, my stomach will be unnaturally upset & the indigestion. Oh holy hell, the indigestion. It seems the nausea & indigestion go hand in hand. If I try to take Zofran for the nausea my indigestion flares up & then I'm in severe pain. No matter what I do I'm in massive pain due to the indigestion.

I have never wanted to do surgery so bad on myself until now. I want to cut myself open & rip out my gallbladder.
