i start orientation next week for a hospice position, any advice, thoughts, recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

i am nervous but excited. a new area of nursing for me.

also any of you wonderful lpn's have any advice? i know the rn's do, but i won't be doing admissions so i'm not to concerned about that area.

can someone describe what their orientation was like?

thanks so much!!

Congratulations on your new job! Only advice I have is to make sure you watch your health. Maybe you should enlist the aid of hubby to keep an eye out on you. Hubbies are good for that! Good luck with working in hospice. Hope you find the work to be meaningful. Remember, you can always come here for advice and to vent when necessary.

The previous post is right on target. You need to take care of yourself and the hospice team needs to take care of each other. I had a nurse working on my team that just did not know how to set boundaries. She got so involved in her patients that they all had her home phone number and she would go out at all hours (off the clock) and sit with patients and attend to whatever needs there were. Then she would try to do her regular caseload during the day.

I love hospice work but I turn it off when I am off duty. I do overnight on call and some nights there are several deaths and one must be careful not to cross over that line that separates a professional hospice nurse from grieving family and friends.

Depend on your team for support as you get oriented to this new field of nursing.
