Will a Medical Terminology book help?

Nursing Students General Students

Hello,

I'm finishing up my prereqs before starting NS in the fall. I would like to work at a hospital this summer to get a little experience and knowledge before I start since I have NO medical experience whatsoever!

I was online and I saw there are books on medical terminology. I was wondering if one of these would be beneficial before I go in knowing very little except what I learned in A&P.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

Thanks! :heartbeat

Definitely and you can probably get an old, used copy off Amazon for only a couple of bucks. I took a Veterinary Terminology class before nursing school and it has been so helpful. If you understand the pre-fixes and suffixes most times you can figure out what disease or process they are talking about. Good luck to you, Jules

I second that notion.

It was actually a required text as a first semester nursing student.

If my memory serves me right.. we actually had assignments/workbook exercises due prior to our first semester of school.

If you have no prior medical/healthcare knowledge.. it's a great help. HECK.. even with 10yrs prior healthcare experience... it helped me!

Best of luck

Yes, but I don't feel you need to waste your money on a new book. Try to find the older books. Look on e bay. You may be able to find a medical terminology site with activities such as match making.

It does help to know the terms, definitely.

Here is one of my favorite sites. www.freenursetutor.com

Good Luck!

Thanks for the input! I'll check out some book websites and see what I can find! I think I'm going to need all the help I can get to make me feel a little more comfortable when I start!

i think your money would be much better spent on a good medical dictionary. there are a number of free medical terminology tutorials that you can access online without having to buy a textbook. the links for them are on this sticky thread:
