Hey all. I'm in a bachelor of nursing program, so four years. After we finished the first year we were able to work in LTC (or other places if possible) as care aides. I decided not to and relaxed over the summer, but I do want to work as a LPN next summer (we can get an interim liscence I think). Now, what's worrying me is if I will be able to get an LPN job without CA experience from last summer. I know it depends what's happening in the area as well, but my main question is how much do they want experience when looking for LPNs and what are my chances of being able to find a job (in LTC or hospital) without that CA experience?

It is my understaning that in BC, an RN student can apply for an interim LPN license after completing 2nd year. After submitting all transcripts, etc and waiting for an answer from CLPNBC. I've known a few RN students to do it, but not many do. More will apply for ESN postions, which pay less, but give you more "RN" experience like IV's, IV meds, PICC stuff, etc. Under the supervision of an RN. There are tons of ESNs at KGH. They can apply after 2nd year, but from what I understand, most are after 3rd year. I guess there are only so many positions and 3rd year students get preference.
If this is something you can do, it will likely be more of a benefit to you. Also, it would give you tons more hours than being an LPN. ESNs have guaranteed hours and shifts. If you were to obtain your LPN lisence, you would start out at the bottom of the seniority list and you would get NO CALLS. EVER. I have 2 years experience and approximately 3000 hours and my casual calls have slowed down to a screeching halt. And I can work at 2 LTC facilities and 3 surgical floors at KGH. So 5 potential places and I am hurting for hours right now.
Becoming an LPN won't be of much benefit to you at all. Best of luck with the rest of your studies. :)
