Will there eventually be more nursing jobs in the Bay Area?

Published

Hello Everyone!

I'm not a nursing student yet, but I'm heading into the field. I have a Bachelor degree in Human Bio and I became interested in nursing after an internship with a NP. I'm doing a CNA program right now while I apply to ABSN and Entry Level MSN programs in the Bay Area. I work as a pharm tech at Kaiser so I would like to stay with my job. Also, I am interested in pharmacy, but I don't like how there's not as much patient contact as there is with nursing and that pharmacists have a pretty repetitive work style. Many people are saying to go for pharmacy just because nursing isn't looking too good right now and many nurses are being let go because there are too many nurses. Is this true?! I feel that I would be a great nurse, but I also don't want to be having a hard time finding a job when I get out of school. What are your opinions?

Thanks,

Optimism :nurse:

I see no more job listings in the Bay area now than I saw during the ten or so years I lived in the area. I seriously doubt there will be a ton of job listings three years from now or six years from now.

Honestly? --If you enjoy and are quite capable in the sciences (especially in chemistry), go for pharmacy. You will have plenty of interaction with others (if not patients). Pharmacists are in short supply pretty much everywhere, so you should be able to find a job no problem. They also do exceptionally well financially.

Specializes in Tele Step Down, Oncology, ICU, Med/Surg.

The reality is that even while there was a nursing shortage there never really was a nursing shortage in the immediate Bay Area--so the job market here is even tighter than most areas and will never be an easy one in the foreseeable future.

However, those with existing contacts/careers within a Hospital are more likely to be hired as nurses.

Good luck on your journey.
