Will becoming an IBCLC aide me in applying to Mom&Baby, L&D, etc?

Published

I am a pre-nursing student, recently I have an opportunity to work for WIC as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. They will provide training, and document my hours so I may take the IBCLC exam. Just curious if it will help my career goals? I know it's tough right now to get a job. My long term goal is to become a CNM and/or WHNP. I need at least 1-2 years of experience as a nurse beforehand. Thanks for any input!

I think it would definitely help, but have you looked at the pathways to sit for the exam? It's a rather long process especially if you're not a nurse yet. My guess is that you would finish nursing school before you had enough hours to become certified, unless you are already some sort of health professional.

You will also need more than counseling hours to qualify to set for the exam. You need to do some research. Obtaining an IBCLC is a long process like merrick stated. Check out the pathways on the IBCLE website:

It took me about 3 years to finally get all of my CEUs and my counseling hours to sit for mine and I was already a nurse. Starting as a peer counselor is a great start, but finish nursing school first and then consentrate on IBCLC.

It all depends on where you are applying. Like the others have posted...it will take a while to get the cert. Having the experience will look good on your resume and may give you an edge over another new grad applying for the same job. It is very difficult to get into those positions right out of school, but it is possible. If working for wic is something you want to do and are interested in, go for it. It never hurts to gain more experience and knowledge!! It may lead to other opportunities and connections that will be helpful when you graduate. Good luck!!

Thank you for your Comments! I did research the requirements, I know it is a lot of hours. I am really passionate about breastfeeding and still nurse my daughter. I would love to work for WIC and still have a long way to go before I am a nurse. i figured I could work towards IBCLC if I am doing the peer counseling anyways :)

Then totally go for it! If it is a passion, then we definately need more of you in the field!
