Will becoming a childbirth educator help me get a job in L&D?

Published

I want to do everything to maximize my chances of getting hired in L&D. I am still a student and realize that it is hard to get a job there as a new graduate, but I want to eventually get a masters for nurse-midwifery, and many schools ask for one year labor and delivery before they will admit you. What else can I do to maximize my chances?

I will offer advice as a childbirth educator: I don't think it's just a square you fill to gain entry into L and D nursing. It's a skill and commitment that takes time, and as a student, it may be hard to do---as nursing school is time consuming. So is gaining certification and experience as a CBE.

Personally, I suggest doing your best in school, and letting anyone and everyone you speak with know you wish to be an L and D nurse....network with people, instructors, managers at your clinical hospital site, etc. That was how I did it. Being a CBE is a big commitment, not something you do short term, as a stepping stone, from my experience. And to be a good CBE, it's actually helpful to already have experience as a doula or L/D nurse, first----not the other way around. It's an important job that affects people's understanding and enjoyment of a huge event in their lives.
