A continent, alert and oriented patient was told last night to just use the bathroom in his pull-ups. When the staff came in this morning, Mr. G's sheets were soaked and he was understandably upset. Jackrabbit CNA who told Mr. G to just "go" is now suspended pending investigation. The CNA picked on the wrong patient. Heck any patient who is told that deserves to be thrown off of a cliff. I am upset for Mr. G.

I've heard aides do that, too.
I guess they figure that changing a brief is less work for them than taking a resident to the bathroom? Doesn't make much sense to me.
If nothing else, all the facilities I have worked at have had urinals for the continent males...it takes about 2 seconds to empty them.
People are just lazy and make no sense.

Yeah, Mr. G cannot use the urinal and "freezes" up when one is placed before him.
I agree that people are lazy and make no sense. Thanks for the post!

Oh my gosh...
I just keep thinking to my self when I hear these stories. "What if that were my Grandmother or Grandfather" and "One day I'll be in this situation and need the proper help"
I like to believe in Karma in these situations.

Gah. I like to think the aide was just SO BUSY with something more pressing that she didn't have the time to walk him to the bathroom. I know when I've been caught up helping in an emergency that everyone else is kind of ignored.
If that isn't the case, then the aide needs to pull her act together or else step aside and let someone who is willing to do the job correctly in!

First, make sure the patient isn't lying to protect his pride.

I agree it was the wrong thing to do. However, there are two sides to every story. I once worked with a resident who prided herself on her ability to lie and get aids fired. She went through a ton of them. Good CNAs lost their futures because of her lies.

Amen, some people don't have a brain or don't think it through properly.
I truly believe in karma, and they say she's a *****.

Um, yeah. Not okay. The only way that'd make sense is if it were him saying "Oh no, I'm not gonna make it all the way to the bathroom" and the CNA replied that it'd be okay either way because he has a brief on. I've told residents that if they started to panic about not making it to the bathroom on time - I'd rather have them go in their brief than have a fall trying to hurry when they can't walk well.
