Are you unhealthy?
I am still a student and today our instructor was telling us about nurses being one of the most unhealthy groups overall with weight issues, etc. She said "The docs get it and try to be healthy but the nurses dont seem to grasp the health concept themselves."
WHY?
I am curious for personal reasons (my own health sucks! but want to be healthier in future) and also thinking of doing this subject as my senior project/presentation in sort.
What causes them to be so unhealthy and what can be done to change this? Who is taking care of us? Are we destined to take care ourselves last?

I have actually wanted to see a study. It seems no one wants to touch on any nursing issues in any way. I am sure we are a very unhealthy group of people. It's proven what stress does. I wonder how many suffer with Divertics, IBS, Colitis, pain, back injuries, etc.
I feel like I'm in a group of leppers. No studies. Ignore staffing issues.
I do think a lot is stress. I think some nurses become unhealthy from working night shift for years. I can't imagine being severely overweight and trying to keep up in this field. I never had weight problems. I hardly every smoked - was more of a non-smoker. I am now 50 lbs heavier and was up to 2 packs per day from last job. Been off since February and I am now down to maybe 1 to 5 a day. Lost that craving and on my way to giving it up. Now I need to exercise and lose weight but I'm addicted to brownies or fresh nestle's toll house cookies with all that I am going through.
i work the 11p-7a shift, and i think that has definitely attributed to my weight gain as of late. when you do the overnight shift, you're body has to adjust its internal clock, and that doesn't always happen. i do most of my eating on nights, and when i get home in the morning, i stay up for a couple of hours, but then go right to sleep, and do it all over again. when i do try to excercise, it makes me sooo exhausted, i want to go and nap. any suggestions?
