Just out of curiosity for someone working on transitioning into psych nursing.

Why do most psych jobs seem to be 8 hour rather than 12 hour shifts?

Personally I like 8's so no big deal, but curious about this when most "medical" slots seem to be 12 hour?

I guess this is an old thread but I think I know why. Younger nurses tend to prefer 12 hour shifts and medical floors have a higher turn over rate... thus they have more new grads and younger nurses. I work in psych now and at least where I am, the turn over rate is very low and we have fewer younger nurses. We are on 8's.

My organization offers 12s and 8s depending on unit. I typically work 12s as this works best for my current schedule. I've worked both 8s and 12s and find pros and cons to each.
