Why can't I get a job? Help!

Published

Hi! Let me tell you a little about me: I am a new grad RN that graduated in Aug. and I will be taking NCLEX-RN on Oct 6. I have worked as a CNA and LPN in home health care with pediatrics and geriatric patients, I am fluent in Spanish.

I have applied for over 12 positions at different hospitals since I have graduated. I have only received one interview and that was on Sept 5. The two times that I called the HR lady about the job she said the director has still not made a decision.

I am starting to get very worried. I would have thought that with my past experience and being bilingual especially here in AZ I would have a job by now.

What happened to the nursing shortage that I had been hearing about. I never thought it would be this hard to get a job.

Any suggestions?

Thank You!

I also worked as an LPN in home health while I went to school for my RN. The good news is at least you can continue the home health in the meantime while you wait for the right opportunity to come along. This time of the year, the census is low but it should be picking up very soon for the winter season. Make sure you try to get in there before the December grads start snatching up the jobs tho! Worst case, you should be able to get into a new grad program that starts in January. I think it has to be your first RN job though to be a new grad, so hopefully since its the same job u had as an LPN they wouldnt give you a problem.

Did you send a thank you Letter to the Director thanking her for the interview and expressing your continued interest in the position?

Yes, I did send the director that interviewed me and the HR lady a Thank you note.

Maybe you should wait until you take you NCLEX-RN and then apply, some states are very strict about the GN policy simply because they don't want to hire you and then you fail the NCLEX (although we both know your going to do fabulous on it!!!) and there stuck because they extented you and offer and you signed a contract. I'm sure after you'll have so many jobs you won't know what do with it!!!

There's shortages everywhere hun.

Maybe your applying for positions that are looking for a nurse with more experience? Maybe your applying for shifts that are not available or difficult to obtain while being a new grad?

Like stated above though, it may be that they are hesitant to hire on until youve passed your boards. Keep trying and dont let them "forget" your face and enthusiasm. :)

good luck
