Why does everyone in healthcare not like their jobs?

Published

So the thread "if you could do it over again, would you?" has really got me thinking, i went and researched some other medical forums, and pretty much NOBODY in healthcare recommends it to students/younger people, this includes :

nursing

optometry

MD/DO

Dentists

Pharmacy

why does everyone not like their jobs? i understand that nobody really likes their jobs, but almost every doctor, nurse, etc. told me if they could do it over again, they wouldnt, why is this? I have worked in business, retail, sales, and those fields suck and are unpredictable and i couldnt see myself doing that forever, but i always thought healthcare was different, you have a guranteed job, good pay, good benefits, good knowledge, room for advancement, helping others, so whats up with this?

I'm a CNA who once had hopes of becoming a nurse. That changed quickly.

Management who has no clue how to run a floor. EX: NM told me "I don't know how to work the floor." Well, if you don't know how to work the floor how are you going to run it? She's been in nursing for 35 years.

Our CEO has decided we don't need lights on in the hallways or nurse's station. We're allowed a few dim lights but no bright lights. This is just one example.

I know it's not this way everywhere. But it seems everywhere has nasty docs, coworkers who think work doesn't pertain to them, people who don't get the meaning of an emergency and continue to sit on their butts. Patients who have discovered that they are 'customers' and therfore entitled to the same amenities as they would be in a Hyatt hotel or the Palms in Vegas.

I don't appreciated having my breasts and crotch grabbed by 20 year olds, only to say "mmmm, those sure are good." I don't appreciate working my butt off for one patient and not seeing any of my other patients for hours just to make this one person happy. You make that person happy, or you think you do, and they turn on you. They report you to the nursing supervisor saying that you smile too much and are too friendly. Yes, this happened to me. And of course, the demeaning comments about nurses, the "it took you 30 seconds to get here, am I not the only patient?" "Are you dumb or lazy, or both?"

And the infamous staffing: last weekend I worked with another CNA (well, more like a warm body), and 3 nurses for 20 pts. I could not get all my work done, skipped lunch to work, skipped breaks in hope to fit that last bath in. I'm not worried about me, I'm worried about the patients I don't get to see and check on. It's unfair to them.

I can breathe easier now knowing that I am not going to be a nurse. Kudos to those that do. And deepest respect for those that continue to work in nursing for years. I can't keep biting my tongue - it's going to fall off.

Well for one the statement that no one in health care likes their job is false.

I would not do it over again either. I like my job.

You are making a pretty big leap in your logic.

Additionally not everyone recommends others to stay away from these professions.

I do not recommend it to everyone.

No, this is not for everyone. I love taking care of people, but the politics and the changing policies every week really grates on my nerves. It's not for me and I'm so glad I became a CNA first before going to nursing school. I don't hate my job, but I don't love it either.

Specializes in ICU, CCU,Wound Care,LTC, Hospice, MDS.
I love being a nurse!! I have done it for 40 yrs & wouldn't do anything else.

Yes. there are days when I hate certain aspects of the job--like the politics & paper work--but the actual nursing---------you can't ask for better!!

I couldn't have said it better myself!
