The pt is stating that he/she feels they no control over anything and is scared. So think about what could you do to help the pt feel more in control and calm their fears? Go over each option thinking whether it will help them feel more in control and calm their fears:

Option 1 - Informing them that the feelings are normal and expected. Will that help the pt feel more in control and calm their fears? No. Knowing the feelings are normal and expected does nothing to help the pt feel more in control and calm fears.

Option 2 - Providing the client info about what will happen with treatment. Will this help the pt feel more in control and calm fears? Yes. It absolutely would! The pt will have more info - and info is power. When people are armed with info they feel they have more power. Knowing about what will happen with the treatment will give the pt the ability to plan a little and help them know more details about what is going on - giving them more control and calming fears. But there might be an option that is "more right" so we will keep going.

Option 3 - Allowing client time to express feelings by sitting and listening. Will this help the pt feel more in control and calm fears? No. It might help the pt feel a little better because he/she is getting things off their chest. But it isn't going to help them with the issue - they feel they have no control over anything and are scared - the nurse needs to do an INTERVENTION to help with that!

Option 4 - Telling the health care provider that the client may need an antidepressant. This isn't going to help. 1) antidepressants usually take weeks to kick in, so that isn't helpful at all.

Hope this helps. You just need to look at the question, look for what exactly it is asking. Put it into your own words. Then go through each option to see which one answers it best.
