Why al the negativity in LTC???

I realize that abuse does take place in some LTC facilitities. I also know that the public needs to be informed.

Where I work abuse is not tolerated in any way shape or form

If there is a complaint about you, you are automatically suspended

You never recieve the benefit of doubt.

Of course you get to have your day in the office to be heard, then you may perhaps get your job back

With all this in the forfront of the news my question is

Why are they also not showing the good side of LTC

I believe that along with the negative they should also be airing the thousands of good loving caring health care providers doing the work that we love to do.

Not all of us are monsters

I was a supervisore at the LTC where I work. I have recently taken the temporary position of a charge nurse.

The above statements are disgusting. this would never happen in the LTC where I work.

If a residents needs attention they get it. No residnet is allowed to sit wet or for 12 hours at a time.

If our DON came to the floor which she does frequently through out every shift. Also our cooperate head office make spot checks on every shift 2 times weekly. And try as you might you cannot predict when tis will be.

Everyone and I mean everyone on the floor would be fired.

This is bad get out of where you work and report it to the College of nurses. the CCAC and your government officials for LTC and if all else fails call the media.

No one should live under these conditions

Well, it's great if they have found a system that works. My facility is pretty good considering. In the end, you cannot get blood out of a stone....if something is impossible, then it is impossible. I would like more facilities to make it possible with adequate ratios, adequate staff!

Where I work they take really good care of the residents and the staff is great. However, they don't seem to care much for the employees. Besides being the lowest paid of any area nursing home, they look for every way possible to try and scam us out of pay. I once got yelled at for staying over 15 minutes to finish charting. (I'm a CNA btw). The nurses were once told they were to clock out after 8 hrs and finish their paper work off the clock.

They keep cutting our staff while increasing the amount of work we're supposed to do. I often work in the heaviest unit with the most disabled people, yet we somehow have to put everyoen down for their naps within 45 minutes (all 22 people), then get our four shower people up and get them showered within 1 to 2 hrs, though theres only 3 shower stalls for 3 units of 22 patients each. So just trying to get in their can be an adventure in itself. In the meantime, we have to try to get certain patients cleaned up and dressed before their annoying family members get there to raise hell if its not done.

I actually got yelled at one week because I DID get all 4 showers done because while doing the last shower, I didn't get the one patient out of bed and dressed before her husband got there. I asked her if that meant I was to neglect the resident that I showered because she doesn't have any family to come in and lobby for "extra" care for her. THe nurse just said I need to find a way to get it all done.

Their answer for us not getting all the work done is that we just dont' work hard enough, we're not dedicated enough or aren't loyal enough. I'm REALLY glad I start nursing school in a few months. Sorry for the long rant.
