Who's failing block I???

I'm not failing block one, but many of my classmates are. How's it going at other schools?

We just took our finals and lost three more people. So from the 30 of us that started, there's still 16 of us left, we're in block 3. It's pretty sad because a lot of the people that we lost were really smart. Out of the five that we lost to the math test, one was an Accountant with a BS in accounting. She was a bank manager and failed the math test!! Then another girl was really smart at math, she used to blurt out the answers in math class before everyone could even write them down, but I think the stress of 'you've got to get 100%' might have just made her too anxious. Unfortunately we had one teacher that really scared the he77 out of us, and I think people got more stressed out than they needed to be.

I also agree with the other poster that said people aren't used to the NCLEX style questions. It was like taking the HESI, you had to backtrack and not think like a nurse (as we'd been doing for two semesters) but we had to in fact, think like an LPN when answering the questions. I'm sure that's where the pre-med people are having trouble.

Nursing school is tough, but it's doable. As long as you have that good support system and you study hard, it shouldn't be a problem. Never take anything for granted, study until you know it, and then study some more. I'm just hoping I make it through clinicals now....:lol2:

What school are you at?

Any updates?

My class is doing better as a whole, but it's becoming apparent that we may not have a few passing. What about all of you?

I'm currently in Block III. So far we aren't losing anyone. We lost 11 people in Block I and 5 people out of Block II (two were because they were late or absent from clinical too many times.:nono: ) Personally, I really think that the program gets easier as you progress through the blocks. The content gets harder but as you progress you get accustomed to the NCLEX style tests and you learn how to "think like a nurse."

Also, I have found that working in a hospital setting helps out. I started externing after Block I and it really helped me with process class and it made me comfortable at clinicals. Whenever I take my process tests I usually try to relate the problem presented in the test to a patient that I have had at the hospital. What were his presenting symptoms, how did we treat him, what were the priority interventions etc.....It really helps, especially when you get hit with one of those questions where you think "how the heck did they come up with that rationale?"

A little update...

The last exams are over and we still have a small amount not passing. It's not as bad as it was before, but I'm still nervous for those few. How about anyone else?

I'm midway through block 1 (my block started Mar 19 and ends Jun 21). Out of 32 people, I don't think anyone in my block is failing. I think there are people who are close, but none who are failing. I'm starting to get the feeling that my classes in my particular program are not as difficult as others' may be in other programs???

This stuff isn't rocket science. I find it easy but I need to put the time in to know it well enough for the exams. I don't think one program is easier than another.

Yeah...not rocket science, but I had this image in my head about what it would be like...and it's not nearly as hard as I thought (what I have read about on this site). However, I may yet be in for a rude awakening...I'm only in my first block.

Sometimes when I think about some of my classmates the following proverb pops into my head (at least how it applies to myself) "In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king!" I think the material actually gets easier (though the intensity increases) in Blocks II and III because you are much more disease focused, and being tested on actual knowledge rather than trying to figure out the fine distinction between "caring" or "compassion."

That's good news, then. Don't get me wrong...I do have to study --but it's not the kind of studying I had to do back in the day.
