I have to admit since becoming a nurse back in January I have had no issues advancing and now getting a new job.
At the hospital I worked at I got whatever I wanted practically as far as scheduling goes and higher % on my yearly raise.
Recently applied w/ a Private Corp that runs prisons for the Government and beatout 5 other applicants based off of being a guy (and they admited this to me during the interview).
Couldnt believe how estatic they were of a male nurse lol..
Of course this could had just been a double edged sword.

My first job was based on the companies need for Male CNA's for Home Health. So I've been in that boat also. Of course if you are male and working in a nursing home, that means you're automatically the 'muscles' of the outfit.

I don't think i was hired specifically because I was a "guy" but back when i was a patient transporter/ PCT II in POCU/PACU they definitely used my muscles ALL the time. Lifting 400 pound patients, etc.

good day! im a male nurse from the philippines and have been hunting overseas jobs. im very much disappinted with other hospitals in middle east(saudi arabia, Kuwait, oman) since most of the time they only hire female nurses. though i have a wealthy clinical experience, most of the time it is disregarded due to my gender.as of now i am waiting for the release for male nurse visa in Dr. soliman fakeeh hospital in jeddah, saudi arabia. i just hope and pray that my petition will be granted.
Jor simply come to the United States if you can. I have had the pleasure of working with many filipino nurses. I live/work in Florida so I would not recommend coming here unless you must. California is where the moneys at now and all the filipino nurses are going there male and female.

I like being a male nurse. It simply gives you the idea that you are the "working muscle" in the team of most are female nurses. But sad to say that in the middle east, they prefer female nurses. like what jori said. for me all nurses are equal, male or female. is'nt that right?!

i'm not exactly a nurse yet, but from my experiences being male doesn't really help.
this summer my nursing school encouraged all the students to take externships instead of a summer clinical requirement. we got to work in the hospital under a preceptor for 10 weeks and get paid while doing so. sounds great right?
in my interview they had asked me about what positive experiences i have had so far in clinicals and i told them about the great times i had when working with children and their parents. i told her that my experience with pediatric nurses was what made me want to be a nurse and it was what i wanted to go into after i graduate.
next she asked if i spoke any spanish.... well no, i don't.
they placed me in the one hospital in their system without a pediatrics department! essentially a glorified nursing home!
so in northern virginia anyway, it seems that being a male or working your butt off in school is worth far less than a little bit of espanola.
after a few weeks of doing nothing and learning absolutely nothing, i tried getting out of there and transferring somewhere else. they always told me they had no positions in pediatrics, but two of the girls i go to school with make a similar transfer request after i did and were happily accepted because they "really needed new nurses"....
at least now i know which hospitals i will not be working for when i graduate.

What if you're a guy who has no muscles?
