Mine was a tiny little lady in the special care Alzheimers ward during my first semester of Senior year. This little lady was so quiet and frail, until it came time to give her meds! :angryfire She became evil. She said to me, in the middle of the dining room screaming at the top of her lung, "Get away from me, your killing me. You're a dirty biotch! I calmly said, "Well, that may be the case but you still have to take your heart pill" She looked up at me, she reminded me of ET in the closet scene, and took her pill no problem. Later she was in her room taking a nap when I went to check on her, I covered her and took off her glasses, she opened her eyes, still reminding me of ET, and said, "Oh thank you dear, you're so nice to me." I love her, miss her and will NEVER forget her! :heartbeat
My most memorable pt was a sweet middle aged woman who was on my unit after having an angiogram. Something about her just connected to me. She was very capable of caring for herself and a joy to talk to.
The doctor advised her that she would be needing open heart surgery. After much deliberation she finally decided to undergo surgery and I saw her off our unit telling her I would likely see her in a few days. (We always get the open hearts back on our unit after a few days spent in CCU.)
A few days later turned into a week and I ran into her husband on his way to CCU only to discover she had suffered a stroke during her surgery and was in bad shape. I stopped in to see her a couple times and finally after a few weeks she came back to our unit.
She could no longer move or take care of herself and her speech was reduced to whispers. My heart hurt for her and I did my best to comfort her. I repositioned her numerous times when she just couldn't get comfortable and she looked at me and then her husband and whispered, "She takes such good care of me."
She was eventually dc'd to a rehab facility and I still wonder what happened to her and hope she is doing well.

I have several from working ALF and LTC. ONe is the 30ish bariatric surgery pt. I was having a hectic day as an NA and rushing to get everything done. As I was ready to leave her room after helping her she says" you forgot something". I think what it is so busy what did I forget.
She hold out her arms and says " you need a hug".
And I really did need it.
