WHNP vs FNP

Published

Hi. I am looking at returning to school. My heart was set on a WHNP program. I have been a OB/GYN nurse for the past 5 years. After talking with a couple FNP's they said that I should do the FNP route because I had much better odds of finding a job. Do any of you WHNP have any advice? My true passion is women's health but I really need to be able to find a job. I would really appreciate any insight anyone has. Thanks!

I&D placement and prenatal care is something I do all the time as an FNP. :)

Maybe I should meet with an advisor to determine what they cover regarding women's health. An OB nurse instructor did advise me to ask to be placed in a family clinic that does obstetrics. I can't believe programs aren't teaching how to insert IUDs. Surely family planning is well within our scope of practice! Maybe its state BON specific. Anyhow you guys can't begin to imagine how helpful you've been! Thanks a bunch.......I love this place! :loveya::

those of you in FNP programs, can you request in your women's health hours, to be placed in an ob clinic or ob/gyn office where you can do OB visits and pre-natal and post-partum care?

Hi Nomadcrna! I am really interested in being a FNP with your skill set. Did you gain your experience in primary care and I&D placement in your practicum?

I also notice you are a DNP, do you think the extra practicum hours offered through that program also helped you get that broader scope of experience?

I am interviewing for DNP FNP programs this month and am looking to do an informational interview with you if you are interested. : )
