Which Specialty for a NEW Nurse?

Published

Hello everyone! Which specialty or area should I look into applying for that will be a good training but not too overwhelming? I am returning to nursing after 7 years, no experience. I already had a job interview for Med-Surg at one hospital and a few days ago I received an email from another hospital asking if I'm interested to schedule for an interview (Outpatient Chemo, Outpatient Dialysis, Skilled Nursing, Behavioral Health, HIV clinic) Specialized Group.

My husband works for the BOP and it is low security prison. They are short on nurses and is hiring right now too. He's been telling me to apply there too. I just couldn't decide which direction to go??

Appreciate all your insights, advice and comments!

Med-Surg will give you a better foundation.

Thanks, that's what I thought too :)

I am really impressed you are getting so much response with no experience. I think you should schedule an interview with any place you can and hear what they are offering before you decide. Med-surg would be an awesome foundation but I would still try to find out more information about all options before choosing.

Apply everywhere. Just get that first job. Once you have experience, your options expand to include what you might want.

Yes, I'd like to think that I'm lucky that they are even considering me to come for an interview and I am grateful for that. Also, we live in a little town so I do not think there's too much competition. But I would really like to gain experience and everybody keeps telling me that MED-SURG is the best option. Also, I will be taking a refresher course and have been taking online CE...to update my knowledge and skills.

Thank you for your response, appreciate it! :)
