Hello everyone:
Just a brief background. I have a BS in Health care Mgmt and I need to take Micro, Anatomy and Physiology before I apply to a program. I am also a 36 years old single mom to a developmentally disabled 14 year old. Because I recently relocated from the East Cost I don't qualify for state tuition until August so I hope to take my pre-reqs until the fall. My question is what programs do you recommend in the east bay? I would want to do the Associate program but the ABSN program would also be great if I can get in. I hear the UCSF program is great but I can imagine how difficult it must be to get in. Also any recommendations on where I can take these pre-reqs would be great. Thank you for reading and for your help.

You might wanna check out your schools. UCSF does have a great program but unless things have changed Im pretty sure they only have a masters nursing program. In san francisco, the schools are City college(community college), SF state, and USF(private).
If you wanted you could also check out Masters Entry programs (dont know if UCSF has one of those). I dont know anything about ABSN's though. But if you havent heard already some other schools ive seen in clinical rotations are, las medanos, sammuel merrit, and i think i remeber seeing some cal state east bay students.
Just make sure when you take your pre-reqs that they are accepted by schools your interested in. If you call the schools they should be able to tell you exactly which courses at your local community college work. Thats how I found out which Anatomy to take at las positas.

Where in the East Bay do you live? The cc's with ADN programs in the East Bay are Merritt (Oakland), Chabot (Hayward), Ohlone (Newark), Contra Costa (San Pablo), Los Medanos (Pittsburg). Samuel Merritt (Oakland) has an ABSN and Entry Level Master's Program. Cal State East Bay also has a BSN program.
Here's a link w/ all the programs in California - http://www.rn.ca.gov/schools/rnprograms.shtml
I took my prereq's at Chabot, Las Positas and Merritt College. The Anatomy/Physio/Micro classes fill up very quickly. I felt that Chabot and Las Positas are better schools. Las Positas has new science labs. However, it is easier to get into the classes at Merritt. You may need to go wherever you can enroll get your classes.
Good luck!

Shelley627, I took my science pre-reqs at Contra Costa College in San Pablo. Debra Barnes for Anatomy is awesome. She also teaches Physiology and I heard she is awesome for that class also. Contra Costa and Los Medanos do the lottery system so it is very difficult to get in. Last year for CCC there were 240+ applicants for 40 spots. Napa College does it by wait list and there are less pre-reqs for their program. However, it is a roughly 2 year wait list. Cal State East Bay or Hayward State offers a BSN program. I think it is 2 or 3 years long and their program requires Organic Chemistry, which I so did not want to take. Also, I want to get done fast so that didn't work for me. I think there are like 700+ applicants for the 150 or so spots at Cal State EAst Bay/Hayward State programs. It all depends how fast you want to start nursing school and whether or not you want to do the less expensive two year ADN route, the state college's BSN route or the more expensive but faster accelerated route thru private schools.
