Which hospitals are good for first job?

Published

Hi Everyone!

I'm Bryan, I'm 51 and have been in the Dual degree BSRN/MSRN program at molloy college for the past 2 yrs. I'll be graduating in May of 2005.

Since I'll be graduating soon I'm interested in learning about different hospitals so i can decide where i would like to work.....

If anyone cares to share info on nyc / queens / long island hospitals i'd be very interested.

Do you know anyone working in Long Island Jewish medical center? Northshore University hospital?

I've been checking into St Vincents' hospital in nyc, NYU medical center (which i find has a 1 yr residency for new nurses that i find Particulary interesting and unique). Would love to know what hospital cultures are like and what interviews are like at any of these hospitals as well as orientations etc.

Should anyone have questions for me i'd be more than happy to share as well...

All the best,

Bryan

Hi Bryan:

I'm a Molloy dual degree alum (still in the grad component). I've worked at a lot of places, with good and bad experiences:

North Shore (Manhassett) was my first hospital job. Med/Surg (orthopedics). Gruelling as hell. I was miserable, but it was a great foundation. I really learned a lot. I never take my M/S experience for granted.

Currently I work at four (yes 4) different places per-diem- all in Peds. One of which is Schneiders. In retrospect, I think I felt the most comfortable there, when I was on staff. I can't complain too much (although it's pretty political- and you have to wait for someone to die to get a day position!!)

It's funny, I've switched around so many times to find the 'greener grass'. But essentially, it all becomes the same in some ways. Staffing is bad everywhere. The $$ is not significantly better anywhere (I also work at NY Presbyterian- tolls and parking make up for the higher per-diem rate). Floating is a reality everywhere (unless your unit is soo short staffed- then you work short!).

At NYP, they have a 1 yr internship, so does NYU (as per another post). NYP pays full salary during the year, and you really are following a nurse for the whole time. You di 6 months in two 'other' specialties, and 6 months in your own unit. They don't do it for all the units. PICU, ER and (I think) OR. You would have to ask about others. It seems pretty good.

God bless you for doing this at 51. :saint: I'm 30, and feel burned out. I'd love to try something new, but I just don't have the energy. Per-diem, hubby, four year old and school are enough or me right now. :rotfl:

The $$ is not significantly better anywhere

hi bonemarrowrn, just like to ask how much per hour rate of nurses there at NY.? thanks!

Per-diem rates range from 38-44/hr. Once you factor in the cost of commute (gas, tolls, parking) it basically evens out.

Some will probably argue that they make more as per-diem, but I guess I haven't been as lucky.
