Which clinic specialties use RNs?

I'd asked about this in the nursing careers forum with little luck. I'm hoping I can get some help here.

Which clinic specialties seem to need/have RNs the most? Before I went to nursing school, I worked as a medical assistant for many years, but only in a few offices that utilized RNs. I'd really like to return to working in a clinic but I'm not sure where to start looking for open positions.

Some backstory: I'm still by my own measure sort of a new grad (less than a year nursing). My first position was in the OR and then, not feeling that particular OR was the best place for a new grad, I accepted a new grad position on a critical care floor. However, I was also diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis five years ago. I've done well with my treatment regimen until I began working on my unit lifting (much more than I should), often sitting down for a grand total of 20 minutes in a 12hr shift and a thousand other exhausting tasks. I often don't eat or get to drink but a few sips during my shift. Recently, I saw my rheumatologist and she informed me that my x-rays, physical exam and lab work show rapidly progressing joint damage over the past 6 months. And I've noticed a definite change in myself.

While part of me will miss my unit, I'm really excited at the opportunity to be in a clinic again. Plus, I want to make my nursing career as long as possible and I love patient care.

I'm hoping I can get some advice here and start looking...thanks in advance. :)

As a new old/grad I finally found my place at a small rural clinic. They kept advertising for a medical assistant and I sent a cover letter stating I noticed they were still looking for MA and that I was a new/old grad. They hired me and doubled my pay rate in the end (which is still wicked low but I am pretty happy there, get to leave at end of day and don't work weekends).

My advice - google all clinics in your area (or the distance you are willing to drive). And go to the clinic site and apply. Heck drop by and apply with a great cover letter and resume. Planned Parenthood, WIC clinics, urgent care clinics, and VA clinics and anything else you can find. I also Google words like clinic + (my location) , or any combo of words and see what pops up. Then I save all these places I find under my favorites and check them periodically (to see what jobs are available). Good luck.

I work at an HIV clinic as a Nurse Case Manager. I suggest researching HIV/infectious disease clinics, or other long-term illnesses that may require nurse case managers!
