Which Chem class??

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm taking Chem 002A at PCC over the Summer.

I'll have two more semesters of prereqs and then apply to BSN programs at UCLA, CSUF, CSULA, CSULB, APU and RN programs at PCC, GCC, LACC. I'm so confused about which Chem class to take. My counselor put me in CHEM 002A at PCC, but it seems it might be the wrong Chem class for Fullerton and for sure wrong for UCLA. What Chem class should I take so it can fulfill the chem requirement for most of these schools? It's so confusing when you want to apply to many schools.

That's definitely the tough thing about applying to different schools! Especially when it's a mix of UC, state, or community colleges. I would say make a spreadsheet for all the schools you wanna apply to, making note which schools require which courses (as well as any additional application requirements, like minimum TEAS score required, if there any optional points to be had, etc.)

If you want to cover all your bases, then take all the courses you need for said schools. But that's probably unrealistic for most people since that may take too much time/money. So I'd recommend either 1) picking the school you really want to go to and focus on taking courses for that, or 2) picking schools that have the same/very similar prereq's so you increase your chances at getting in since you have a larger pool of nursing schools that you're applicable for.

Typically, UC nursing schools are very competitive from what I've heard, since there are so little of them, especially UCLA. The chances of a transfer getting into UCLA's nursing school is very low since they admit a low number of nursing transfers. I'm not saying you shouldn't go for it, or that it's impossible, but it's important to weigh the probabilities of you getting into each school and whether any possible risks are ones you don't mind taking (esp considering that nursing overall is so competitive).

If you haven't already watched her videos, Miki Rai has some helpful vids about her experience as a nursing transfer at UCLA. Best of luck!

Originally I wasn't even going to bother with UCLA, but I just started working there as a CNA so I'm wondering if that will give me any advantage on the application. I need to look more into that. I know I could use my supervisor as a reference.

You can try using ASSIST.  This was set up for students in California so they could have easier access to figuring out which classes transfer to what school.  There are also filters you can use to see if a CSU or UC school accepts the class you're looking at

Yeah, it's definitely worth a try! Since you're working there as a CNA already, maybe try asking around about their nursing school to gauge how competitive it really is and what your resume or whatever needs to look like. And maybe try to apply to other schools along with UCLA, just to cast a wider net :)

Update...I've decided not to bother with UCLA or UCI since they both require a lot more (and different prerequisites). I also learned that if I take a Chem class at a different community college than the one I'm attending, I can find a Chem class that is accepted at the three CSUs I want to apply to (and the CCs I'll apply to). My advisor didn't offer that info to me, just told me to take their Chem class. I'm glad I did my homework!
