I am kind of interested in correctional nursing, but I haven't been able to find any openings to apply for in Georgia. Where do you look for those openings? I am currently working in L&D and I need a part time job. I love L&D but I don't want to get burned out on it. I always said I would be a police officer if I wasn't a nurse. I think it would be a great change of pace for me. I also want to keep my Med-Surg, Assessment, and Psych skills up to date. It is real easy to forget all that stuff when you work with pregnant ladies all the time. If anyone has any ideas, I would be grateful. Thanks
The one I work for pays the same as the state facilites. The insurance is comparable. For me, the cleanliness and the safety is more important. If I had to, I would give up a dollar or two an hour if that meant I worked in a safer facility. The facility I work at has never had a hostage situation in the entire time it's been open.

Well ... the pay difference is a lot more than that in my area. And, do you have a pension? Usually, you can't beat state pension benefits ... especially in California. I know many who quit the private facilities, which only offered 401K ... to work for the state because they wanted the pension benefits.
We've had a lot of riots with private facilities here so ... I personally haven't seen any evidence that private is any safer than government run prisons. In fact, the county had to take over one prison because there were too many riots with private contractor management.
I'm sure there are problems with both. I'm just not sure you can definitively say one is better than the other on the safety issue. In the end, I'll take the better pay and pension working directly for the state.

The problem with private facilities, at least in my area, is that the pay and benefits is a lot lower than if you work directly for the state. Afterall, the private facilites are "for profit" and that profit comes from the employees. Why do the same work for less pay and benefits?
Not worth it IMHO.
