Where to live and work in Texas?

Hi folks:

I am thinking to move to Texas to work as RN. Not sure what part of Texas to live in. For now, I am thinking about Plano as they have good school for kids. Plano housing price is not bad either. I don't know anthing about jobs in Texas. Can I get a job with 3 yrs Tele and Med/Surg experience? Anyone would like to suggest? Thank you! John

The job market is excellent for RNs in DFW, and Plano is considered a part of DFW since it is a few miles north of Dallas. Plano is a bit pricey for my standards, but I'm sure it has everything you're seeking in a city. The cities of Plano, Frisco, Allen, and McKinney are actually the "boomtowns" of DFW, since this area is where the explosive growth is occurring.

With your experience, you should have no problems finding work. However, the pay might not be what you're expecting.

AZ summer is hot, and I am not used to the desert. Kid education is not that great. I want to move for this reason.

I looked at maps. I found Texas is going to be my best pick. Good housing price, No state income tax, Good school districts if you know where to lilve, plus I can have some greens in the yard.

The Plano, Allen & McKinney areas all have decent schools, for Texas standards. Although I can't be certain, I think you would have to take a pay cut of about $5-6/hour as staff in that area of Texas. Also, research the property tax rates and the true cost-of-living figures. For instance, utilities, in actuality, run a lot more that what is reported as the average cost. And, it is HOT in Texas-maybe not as bad as AZ (can't tell you because I've never been in AZ). For my standards, originally from the Northeast US, I only found about 2 weeks (14 days) total a year actually comfortable, in regards to weather/temp.

I'm sure you can use the compact license to initially work in Texas; but, not sure how it goes when you change your residence there. Try the Texas BON website & you might be able to link to that topic.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE North Texas. I worked in Plano for 4 years and although I moved away to be with my new love I regret the work move to South Texas. The area you want to go to is great (but is really hot in the summer), schools are great, Dallas is only a few minutes away. The area is pricy but you get what you pay for. I lived in an apartment when I was there and they had competitive rates but the housing market is higher. Everything is convienant for shopping and such a variety of everything including different races of people. Plano, Frisco, McKinney and all of that area is very clean and although I have no kids in school I have only heard great things. I would suggest working for a MAGNET facility and you should have no problem finding employment, just be patient when you fill out applications. It took awhile to get responses once I applied in Dallas. I will be joing you as soon as my Husband finds a law enforcement position and I can't wait to go back. People are friendly and the customer service in the area can't be beat.

Thank you guys for the good feedbacks. Housing prices in Plano is not that high, comparing with Phoenix. Around 150000-200000, you can get a nice house in Plano while you only can get a so-so house in a Phoenix suburb. I suppose no income tax will offset the cost of high property tax in Texas.

Nursing in AZ is good, I only get 4-5 pt in Tele/Med/surg. How about Plano area? There is a nursing shortage problem in AZ. Usually, my bosses are very nice to me. Thanks John
