Where to live in BC?

Published

Hi,

I'm relocating to BC and I was wondering if anyone out there has any advice about where to live - mostly relating to safety.

I know that East Vancouver is not a particularly pleasant part of town. Also, Surrey has some violence issues. I've also heard some negative feedback about New Westminster.

I've heard Burnaby is a good place to consider as well as all other areas of Vancouver. Richmond is another good one apparently.

Any advice? What about Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Pitts Meadows, Maple Ridge?

I'll be working at BC Children's and would like something within 45 minutes driving distance.

I worked for VIHA early this decade. The island is a strange place to look for work. The smaller hospitals were looking for specialty nurses and the other fields were usually hired on as casuals.

Depending on where you relocate to there are a lot of retirees who often have a wife who is a nurse and wants to work out there. There also seemed to be an unspoken preference for hiring local new grads over "experienced outsiders".

The overall economy on the north of the island was the pits with high unemployment in every occupation.

The winters were long and wet. This is coming from somebody raised on the lower mainland. Give me a cold, crisp, bright Alberta winter anyday.

It appears that there are still quite a few jobs outside of Vanc. and Victoria. Still I am noticing a lot of these jobs are casual as well.....hmmm keep looking!!

New Westminster is not only more affordable than Vancouver, it is alive with new nightclubs, restaurants and other interesting shops and venues. I have lived here for over 5 years and I enjoy having a corner store next door and a mall within walking distance.
