When should I start applying for jobs?

Published

Hi everyone, I graduate in June and was wanting to know when I can start applying fro jobs? I have read other threads where people have applied and gotten jobs before graduation-what do you put on the application? That your an RN student at such and such school with an anticipation graduation date.

I am confused about this process and need someone to clarify, thanks!:smokin:

I started applying for jobs in March/April I think. It wasn't that long ago but I have a hard time remembering! Just put on your resume your school name, and the anticipation date of graduation and the type of degree. I got hired before I graduated, in fact most of my friends did. Hope this helps!

I would apply early because by the time I started applying, the only jobs left were med-surg jobs. If you want a specific area, do it before everyone else. I was hired before I graduated. Of course our manager has gotten burned a few times by people who haven't taken boards, so she no longer hires new grads that aren't licensed.

I didn't apply for jobs until I had my license in my hand. had no problem finding a job. I would think if you applied too early, the potential employer would forget about you. Most places aren't going to "save" you a job when they have other candidates applying that are already licensed.

Now is the best time to apply-- May Graduates have a lot of competition for a limited number of spots and with this economy, it is best to be prepared. I've read numerous posts on this site about graduates still looking for positions. I was very fortunate to find a position (December '08 Grad) at the hospital that I wanted to work and in the field that I wanted. When submitting your resume, just state your anticipated graduation date. You may also want to attend nursing career fairs and investigate nurse residency programs- which btw are currently looking for May Grads now. You can find a lot of these programs just by typing in new grad RN residency program in your web browser. I wish you well in your job search.

I agree with applying NOW! Esp. if you want to get into some sort of internship program (i.e. for critical care, emergency, etc.). Yes jobs will almost always be available, however, you may not get your first choice. Start applying now if you havent already - I was a May grad who applied in Jan, interviewed and was accepted in Feb. They basically wait on you to graduate in May/June/whenever - then you may be able to start work in a modified role (i.e. clinical intern, PCA, etc.). Then once you pass boards, you're already there and your job is waiting for you. New grads will be coming out all summer long, don't wait to compete with other schools. Also, what most people don't consider, the sooner you get in and start, the sooner you start earning seniority rank. (More seniority in your job = better position for vacation requests, job transfers, etc.)
