When should I say I can start

Published

Hi everyone,

I am graduating in May and am applying to a few jobs beforehand based off school colleagues referrals (current RNs). They recommended I apply early to avoid the onslaught of job applications that will come from my peers after graduation. I live in a competitive area.

The potential problem I see is that interviewing (and if I'm lucky to get the job) and training could interfere with my practicum which will be starting soon, 8-5 weekdays for 4-6 weeks. Practicum obviously comes first... But my application is ready and our school tells us to apply for jobs before we graduate. Am I jumping the gun? Will my application be discarded if I can't interview and/or train right away? This is for a new grad home health position. Would it be better to wait until I am closer to finishing practicum to avoid scheduling stresses? I'm really excited for home health and this sounds like a good company, one that offers a lot of training and support for new grads. ANy advice is appreciated!

On the employment application, enter a date after graduation in the "available" date field. It's not unusual to do this. Very few applicants are able to start a job immediately. Anyone who reviews your application / resume will realize that you are still in school.

Best of luck on launching your nursing career!
