When to address low GPA?

Published

Hi all,

I'm a December BSN grad who passed the NCLEX last month. I've started applying to nurse residencies in my area, and have a question regarding the inclusion/omission of my GPA in some resumes I've begun to craft. At least one of the hospitals I'm looking to apply to has "3.0 minimum GPA" listed under their eligibility qualifications.

My final GPA (if I remember correctly- have to go find my transcripts to confirm) was about 2.7 or 2.8, I believe. There were circumstances that I honestly believe factored into this average (4 years of ROTC, financial issues/stress, situational depression, multiple family emergencies in the last 2 semesters) and I know that my GPA doesn't reflect my work ethic, ability, or passion in regards to my upcoming nursing career.

Because of this, I'm feeling a bit discouraged and wondering if I should even bother applying. Is there a time other than an in-person interview to address this blemish on my resume, or is that something I need to explain in the resume itself?

I'd love to hear some advice, or experiences from anyone who was ever in the same boat! Thanks, everyone!

While I would have my answer ready, I would not bring up any negative subject myself. If they want to discuss it, believe me, they will ask the questions.
