Ya know....the same applies to me Coleen! I have an aunt who has been a nurse for many, many years, and she has said some of the same things to me also! I actually start nursing school in January, and she keeps telling me that it would be best if I could do nursing from the administrative aspect. I certainly don't understand it either!
REALLY? IT KIND OF MAKES ME WONDER IF I AM SURE I WANT TO GET INTO THIS. MY FIANCE'S MOM WAS THE DIRECTOR OF NURSES, AND SHE SAYS THAT I REALLY NEED TO TAKE OUR FUTURE INTO CONSIDERATION BEFORE APPLYING TO NURSING SCHOOL. IM PRETTY STRONG WILLED, SO I WILL STICK WITH IT, IF IT IS A MISTAKE, IT WILL BE A LESSON LEARNED. I CAN ALWAYS PICK UP AND START OVER. RIGHT?!
If you want to be a nurse, you should be a nurse! Lord knows we need all the help we can get....
I happen to love what I do, and the fact that I'm paid a decent wage for doing what I love is icing on the cake. Sure, there are shifts when I question my sanity, and yes, there are a lot of things in nursing which could use some improvement. Maybe the next generation of nurses will be the one to change everything! But you'll never know unless you try.
BTW, here's a wee bit of "Net-iquette"....please don't type in all caps.......it indicates you're SHOUTING!!!
Good luck to you!
A good way to find out if nursing is what you think it is would be to see if you can set up a "shadowing" experience with an RN in a field you might be interested in. Some units are very willing to do things like this - some are not. Try calling a nurse recruiter at a local hospital.
If nursing turns out to not be what you want/hope/expect it to be - it is better to find that out now. If it turns out to be your heart's true desire, than you can disregard discouraging remarks with the confidence that you have at least some idea of what you are getting into.

HI EVERYONE!
I JUST WNATED TO KNOW IF ALL NURSES GIVE THE SAME ADVICE TO NURSES-TO -BE!
LET ME TELL THE STORY FROM THE BEGINING...
I WAS AT MY CASHIER JOB AND A CO-WORKER AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT OUR COLLEGE LIFE. WHEN I TOLD HER I WAS GOING TO SCHOOL TO BE A NURSE, A CUSTOMER JUMPED IN AND SAID, "YOU DON'T WANT TO DO THAT, IM A NURSE, AND I WISH I DID SOMETHING ELSE WITH MY LIFE...BUT IT IS TOO LATE NOW."
WHY WOULD SHE SAY THAT? I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO RESPOND, BECAUSE SHE KNOWS BETTER THAN I WOULD.
SO ANYWAY, IT WAS PRETTY DISCOURAGING, SO I THOUGHT I WOULD BRING IT UP.
