What's your RN to pt ratio for nights?

Published

I was curious about something so I guess I'll ask for a poll of sorts:

If you work overnights, what's the nurse to patient ratio on the unit in which you work? Is this ratio different from the day shift?

On my med/surge floor we usually had 6-7 patients at night, though we could go up to about 9 patients apiece at times. We generally had at least one aide on the floor, though if we went below 12 patients at night (and that was happening on that floor this summer a LOT... hospital went into hiring freeze), there would be no aide. I worked on a post-surgical unit with overflow from the medical unit.
