What's it like to be a PICU nurse?

Can anyone tell me more about the day in the life of a PICU nurse? What are the most common types of patients you see? What skills help you to be successful in your job? Thanks!

Do you honestly think being a parent at home will have a mentally strain on your own household as a parent to these fragile kids and trying to be a parent to your own kids?! ...I'm asking because I'm a parent myself, and I'm currently enrolled in nursing school with peds/NICU as a field choice

That's something no one can predict. Each person manages these aspects of their job differently. There are times when we all over-identify with a patient or family but if you're already afraid you're going to find it too hard, it's probably a sign you should be looking for other avenues.
