What's going on with VNSNY?

I used to work for the Visiting Nurse Service of NY (about 12 years ago) and resigned on excellent terms to accept another position. I even wrote a long letter of appreciation and thanks to the Director expressing my respect for VNSNY. Recently, I applied to work for them Per Diem and I cannot get a response from their Nurse Recruiter. I would like your comments on what has (has not) occurred. Here's what I have done so far:

June 2010 - I wrote an email requesting an interview because I was not available on Tuesdays (open house day). I received a response indicating I should apply online.

June 25, 2010 - I applied online to a posted position, one for which I meet all qualifications.

October 21, 2010 - I went to a job fair and spoke to an individual at the VNS booth. I explained what had happened and she indicated that the Nurse Recruiters hire based on the online application database. We decided that perhaps my application didn't go through so I gave her my resume and she made a note regarding my previous application. We looked at the current list of available positions and chose one appropriate for me. Then she assigned me a particular Nurse Recruiter. She indicated that I should probably wait a week or so before I contacted her so she could have time to sort through the pile of applications received from the job fair.

November 9, 2010 - I sent an email to the generic email address I had been given and named the particular individual assigned to me and asked to be contacted regarding the position. No response.

November 12, 2010 - I sent another email, similar to the first. No response.

November 15, 2010 - I telephoned and left a message on the assigned Nurse Recruiter's voice mail, indicating that perhaps the previous messages had not reached her and requesting to be contacted regarding the position. No response.

I understand that not everyone can be contacted to be told "The position has been taken." but with my history of working for VNS, my years of experience, and my persistance in trying to obtain a response as to the status of my application, I see the lack of response as completely unprofessional and downright rude. Does anyone have any insight into how VNSNY manages their Human Resources these days? Is Human Resources outsourced?

Does anyone who works for VNSNY have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Signed,

Puzzled

It is possible that someone entered "Do Not Rehire" in your employee folder after you left. This does happen sometimes even though the employee thinks they are leaving on good terms. You might want to invest about $80 for a reference checking service to do a reference check with this company. But based on your post, I would think this is just typical for the online application process. I do not apply online because all of my online applications have been ignored. Easy to be ignored by a computer software application.

Unlikely since I was on excellent terms with everyone when I left and my references are superb. Then again, I doubt anyone who supervised me directly is still there so I wouldn't have anyone fighting to get me. I do think you are right about online applications but, given my email and voicemail messages I'm really mystified. I do think that the positions I am applying for may have in-house applicants who would have priority for the jobs. That's understandable and fine with me. I just don't understand why they wouldn't take the time to send a quick email or phone call to say "The job you have applied for is no longer available at this time."

I'm going to keep trying but if they persist I will write to Corporate VNSNY to make sure they are aware this is happening. If they seem to condone the activity I may go around the corner to my local news station and talk to a journalist about doing a story on "Qualified Applicants that get Ignored" or similar story. I think it would make an interesting story with some surprising stats since I'm sure it happens to many in a job market such as this but it makes a loud statement about how our work ethic and manners have changed in this generation and business climate.

In the meantime, I am working Per Diem through an agency and I am sometimes pulled in multiple directions because the places I work all want me back again and again. :yeah:

Not a bad position to be in...still would like to work for VNSNY again and I was hoping someone who reads these posts could give me some inside information.

Could it be that with this economy they have many more applicants than positions?
