What's the deal with Columbus State admission?

Published

My friend applied in January 2009 for their traditional ADN program and was accepted (as all students are) and was told her start date was March 2011. In the meantime, she applied twice to their online program and was rejected.

Their website states for application dates...

Traditional Track

  • Jan. 6-15, 2010 for the Autumn 2010 class
  • July 1-9, 2010 for the Spring 2011 class
  • Jan. 10-19, 2011 for the Autumn 2011 class

I called the school and asked: "So, If I apply during the July 2010 application period and meet all the requirements, I'll definitely get to start in March of 2011?" Their answer? YES OF COURSE YOU WILL!

Is the waitlist gone at CSCC or is the nursing school misleading me? I don't want to hold out and stay in Columbus an extra year only to be disappointed and realize I could have started at Tri-C sooner after all.

Also, what is the deal with CSCC requiring the anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and biology sections for the Hesi A2 exam?!

They require organic/biochem as a prerequisite, but a lot of the chemistry seems to be stuff covered in general chemistry (nuclear chem, molar relationships, stoichiometry, etc). Additionally, biology isn't a prerequisite in any way, shape, or form. Anatomy and physiology are taken during the nursing program and are not requirements. The Hesi review book states: "A one-year course in anatomy and physiology should be taken before the student prepares for the anatomy examination." Yet, CSCC expects us to rock that section BEFORE taking any form of A&P. What is up with all that?! Luckily I've taken biology and general chemistry for science majors and I've taken anatomy (not physiology) so I'm a bit better off, but that seems really unfair. Additionally, I took anatomy twice (As both times) and both were high level with human cadavers taught by medical school faculty and there is a lot of anatomy stuff in the review book I never learned. Needless to say, I'm frustrated and worried.

Thoughts?

When I started looking into the pre-reqs a few years ago, I was told by the advisor that I'd be ready to apply January 2009 and would likely need to reapply again in 2010, hoping for a 2011 start date and a 2013 graduation (I'm sticking with the traditional program, I'm stretched too thin with work and family life that the forced class-time helps).

I don't know if it was grades/NET scores, or if the rush has died down some, but I start next quarter and have orientation in two days. Those that I took NURC101 and 102 with that applied to the online track started last fall.

Seems like quite a few CSCC students on here - any other traditional track peeps starting this Spring that want to buddy up?

Do you mind me asking what your GPA was and your entrance test score? My best friend was denied with a 3.5 and 4.0 prerequisite and a 90% on her entrance test two straight years so I decided not to even bother applying...

I have no idea what my NET score was. Sorry!

My GPA must have been in the 3.8 range at the time...my last academic coursework GPA that transferred was a 4.0.

I have anatomy this quarter, so kiss that 3.8 goodbye. :(

Another student I took Nurc 102 with Summer 09 is also in this Sp 10 start class for online. I don't know about anybody else.

The online meeting is also Friday. I wonder if we'll be in the same one or if they break them up? Hm. Maybe I'll see you there!

How long does it take to hear back from the program? I applied to the online program in December, to start in classes in August 2010 and was just wondering how long it takes them to get back to you?

It took about 5 weeks for spring notification. GL

Well, that is good to know. That means I should hear something back anytime now. I was thinking it might take them an extra couple weeks since Christmas and New Year fell around this time.

A friend of mine applied to both the online program and traditional program in Jan 2010. Two days ago she received notification that she was accepted into the online program. I applied just to the traditional program and haven't heard anything yet. Anyone know how long it takes them to let you know if you've been accepted or not for the traditional program?

I'm guessing it will probably be the first week of March. It seems to take about 1.5 months to get your letter. I got mine for the online program yesterday. :)

I got my acceptance letter for the online track this week also! Looks like we will be classmates in the fall!!!

Would the people who have gained admission to the online program please share their stats? I'm interested to see if I have a fighting chance!

Congratulations Megan060, yes we will be classmates. I wonder how many people got accepted.

ForeverLaur, I had a 3.29 GPA from DeVry in CIS. I currently have a 3.79 GPA at Columbus State. I didn't take the H2, I took the net. I got an 86% on the math and a 79% on the reading. I think you need to apply and take a chance. I didn't think I would get in because my grades were mediocre for my undergraduate degree but I did and I am happy. I have been in class too long to have to do the lecture route. I just can't learn in lecture. Even in the anatomy lab he lectures a bit and it bores me because I just can't learn anatomy from someone else.

Well my undergrad bachelor degree GPA is a 2.3. My CSCC GPA is a 3.8, but my cumulative is still only a 2.7 because 35 credit hours at CSCC at almost straight As doesn't help when you are building on 160 semester hours :(. I took the Hesi A2 and got a 97.4% in the math and English language. If you factor in the science, I have a 90% cumulative on the A2.
