whats appropriate?

I was just wondering, How long do you follow up after an interview if you are interested? And what do you say? Any tips for the interviewing process about whats appropriate and whats not will be greatly appreciated!

I don't follow up. If they want me they contact me. I do immediately send a thank you note, hand-written.

I did immediately follow up with a thank you card, I dropped it off the next day. I just did not ask when I was at my interview when the expected time frame would be to hear from her, she said I will check your references out and well be all set and will you will hear from me soon. She had made it seem like I had the job just as long as my references checked out and were good. Ive read things online about calling back after 1 week but then some of my friends say the sooner you call back the better- But i dont want to call back 3 days later if that is too soon, which i think it is. So i guess I was just wondering if I should follow it up?and if so, is a week an appropriate time frame or is it to soon or to late? And what should I say when I speak to the director(HR)? In the other threads I was reading they all said to say soemthing like, Hi we met on(the date of interview). I am really interested in the X position and was just wondering what the status of my application is? or to ask if the position has been filled. Since it is a different job market than it was a couple years ago, callin back makes sense to me- since it shows your are really interested in the position and have taken the tim to folllow up. So heres another question, if you send a thank you card that says i look forward to hearing from you in the future, should you follow up? Ughhh so much ettiquette, which is great, but very every confusing!

When I was hired as a CNA in the hospital, I was told specifically that I would have a follow up call after one week. If I didn't hear from her in one week TO CALL HER! I didn't hear from her, so I gave it 10 days from day of interview and I called her back. She offered me the position then, she also said that she had thought the AHN had offered me the position already as per their discussion, but the AHN was also busy. But I got the job anyway.
