I wanted to get your advice about pursuing a degree in FNP. I recently graduated with my BSN from an entry level masters in nursing program. I am interested in continuing with my MSN classes right away . As a new nurse graduate do you have any advice for me regarding which RN position that will prepare me best in the field of family nurse practitioner ?

1. Working in an urgent care

2 . Working on a Med Surg. floor ( least favorite )

3. Working on a Tele floor

4. Assisted living facility

5. L & D

6. Other ?

Thank you in advance!

Are these all job offers you've received? If so, there's a lot more to look at. How much orientation would you receive with each position, what shift would you be working, how is staffing/RN to patient ratio, how does the pay/benefits compare, how far would you be commuting? Also, are they supportive of you returning back to school (or are you going to continue working while in NP school?), do they offer tuition reimbursement?

If these aren't job offers and you're just looking to see what would be best, I'd go with tele first (you get all the experience of med-surg plus learning how to read strips), then maybe urgent care after you have some experience. Having worked in AL, I would not recommend it unless you want to be responsible for 40+ residents who often need a higher level of care than they are getting. L&D would be good if you wanted to do women's health NP or CNM. Good luck!
