What do you think of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center?

U.S.A. New York

Hi everyone,

I am graduating from an RN program soon and have been offered a job at Memorial Sloan. I am trying to decide (by Monday!) whether to accept the position and so am wondering if anyone has any good or bad experiences to share about working at this hospital? The floor I would be on is Neuro / Ortho. There are so many hospitals out there - it is confusing and difficult to pick and it really helps to hear personal stories of nurses who have actually worked at a place....

Any help is greatly appreciated - thanks!!

I did an externship at memorial and i wa snot happy. I was on the womne's health floor. The hospital has a lot of money but i heard they treat their nurses like crap. Some girls i have graduated with dont really like it ove rther. I toured the neuro unit about 3 yrs ago and it wa svery depressing and dark. You should try NYP.....

Specializes in critical care: trauma/oncology/burns.

Hi, sorry to join this "thread" late, but just "found it"

I worked at MSKCC for 15 years in the Special Care Unit, and I loved it.

Sorry to see that kimaboogie00 was not happy there. I think it says alot about your baseline nursing knowledge and general competency as MSKCC is very "picky" over the "type of nurse" they hire, or at least when I first graduated from nursing school. I applied to Sloan and did not get a response. It wasn't until I had 6 years of trauma/ICU under my belt that I war granted an interview.

Maybe things have changed since I left, but I did not feel like we were treated like crap. Memorial wasn't unionized at that time (did NYSNA get in yet?) but the autonomy that we nurses experienced, the collaboration between RN and Fellows, Residents, Attendings, the opportunity to learn, why perhaps after a few more years with the Army Nurse Corps I might re-interview for a position!

Yeah, working in a hospital that deals with all kinds of CA and allied disease can be depressing but I would not trade in my 15 years working in the SCU for all the gold in Fort Knox!

Let us know of your decision and where you are now practicing.

I know a lot of nurses at Sloan and they like it a lot. It's a well respected hospital with a lot of opportunity to move up. Do you have a BSN or ADN, if you don't mind me asking.

Specializes in PACU.

I have spent time at Sloan with a friend who's son had cancer - I talked with many of the nurses there and for the most part, they love it -- I have an interest in Pediatric Oncology and would love to work there one day. I just graduated so I wanted to get some experience in general before specializing in something.
