hi everyone, i am new to this forum and and currently a cna student in nyc. i have a question. in nys, you need to have your
ekg & phlebotomy certification in order to work in a hospital. does that apply to every state?
How does that work for people who transfer in from out of state? I currently live in Washington and work for a major hospital but may be moving to Oregon in the future. Would I have to retrain and test in order to do the same work I do now?In Oregon you can't work in a Hospital without having a CNA 2 in Acute Care.
In Washington you do not need a CNA to work in the hospital as a transporter or sitter. Realistically though, most places won't hire you unless you have a CNA cert and a 6months-year of experience outside the hospital.

In Oregon you can't work in a Hospital without having a CNA 2 in Acute Care. The OSBN made it a requirement about 8 years ago that you had to have added certification to your CNA. If you were working in a Hospital at the time they rolled that rule out, you were "grandfathered in", but still had to take the state test. They have pretty high standards here, I think you can work in Nursing Homes with a CNA 1, but it helps to have your CNA 2 in Dementia care (not required though).
What's funny is, if you work for the Federal Government, you don't have to have your CNA 1 or 2, just have to have had your certification at one time, training and or experience as a caregiver.
You also have to have your BLS certification to work in any medical setting, Hospital, Nursing home and or VA hospital.
