What specialties are most in demand?

Published

Specializes in Currently: Certified School Nurse.

...in the NY/NJ area.

One, I am simply curious. And two, I have areas in my mind that I *think* I might like to go into (I still have 1.5 years of school left!) and wonder whether there is a dearth of nurses in the areas i am considering or if perhaps there is a shortage.

So I guess, in addition to being curious about which specialities are in great demand, i wonder, as well which areas are more 'popular'.

Many thanks everyone!

Specializes in Neonatal ICU (Cardiothoracic).

I have been interviewing all over NJ and NYC, and it seems to me that they need Peds ICU nurses everywhere. I thought about doing it, but I have a NICU background and found a great job at MSCHONY. Good luck!

Geriatric is always in demand because people are getting older.

Thanks guys and good luck with the new job, Stephen.

Specializes in ICU, Cardiac Cath/EPS Labs.

Hhmmm...Is it true that Pediatrics ICU is greatest in demand?? You mean the area that WE--the nurses--hope to work in as opposed to the area that THEY--the hospitals--have difficulty filling due to the number of nurses needed, tough working conditions, etc....????

The places I was interviewing at were expanding their units, sometimes doubling in size to accommodate peds cardiac units, new open heart/transplant programs, etc. That was the reason they gave for hiring....
