What does San Diego pay?

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello all.

I'm currently a travel nurse with 8 years of ICU experience. Lately I've started to get tired of the travel gig and I think I'd like to settle down. My last assignment was close to San Diego and I really fell in love with the city. I'm trying to decide if I can afford to live there but I'm having problems finding accurate numbers for pay.

Could somebody help me out and let me know how much I should expect to make in SD?

Thank you so much.

That information is all you need. Everyone major acute facility asides from Kaiser, trails UCSD a bit so use that as your gold standard for a full time position. Mid 40s before differentials can make 110k year easy.

New grads in ER in SD are low 40's, so with 8 yrs experience... low to mid 50s? I heard of one senior ER nurse in the area making 55 without differential. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, it does help!

San Diego is more desirable than Sacramento, but cost of living in regards to salary is far better in the Sacramento region. With 8 years you'd be round 60 to 70/ hr. San Diego is high 40s. These don't include differentials. Also, housing wise your going to get a much nicer place in Sacramento. I left Orange County and haven't looked back. I make double up here what I did down there. I'm also working far less.

Thanks for the reply! I'm having a tough time deciding what I value more... Location or pay!

At my facility, 8 years of experience would get you around 42-44/hr. The union has a pay scale based on experience, so not much negotiating room. This doesn't include shift diffs and/or BSN bonus.
