What questions to ask at an interview...

Published

I am interviewing for a position at a different hospital and was wondering what type of questions I should ask to get a good feel for how the unit operates? I am planning to ask if they follow awhonn staffing guidelines. My interview is tomorrow!

Specializes in Developmentally Disabled, LTC, Clinic, Hospital.

Sorry if I'm being stupid but what are "awhonn staffing guidelines" ?

Vicki

There is a "sticky" on the top of the ob/gyn message board page that lists awhonn's recommendations for staffing different types of pts, stages of labor etc. I have a friend who said she wished she had asked because the facility she used to work at had horrible staffing practices and she ended up leaving.

Specializes in Community, OB, Nursery.

Do they float?

Relationship between docs/nurses?

How do they deal with conflict between coworkers?

How do they do scheduling?

Specializes in Have a niche for pysch.

NURSE PT RATIO! :specs:

Specializes in L&D.

I would ask how many deliveries they have per month.

Ask what their nurse/patient ratio is.

Ask what their nurse turnover is.

Specializes in Utilization Review.

Here are a few questions you may want to ask the unit manager on your interview:

1. How many staff do you directly oversee?

2. How do you handle issues within the unit?

3. What are some challenges your unit has overcome? How have they overcome these challenges?

4. How would you describe your managing style?

5. Why is this position open at this time?

6. What is the orientation process?

Best wishes for your interview!
