Hello everyone!
I am a newly graduated RN from NY. I was just wandering to know what professional nursing organization would be great for me to join? I am interested in joining organizations that would help me get updated about latest nursing publictions, would help me participate in various events that would help me enhace my skills/ knowledge etc and more social networking/ seminars/ social work...etc?
I would really appretiate your help.
Thank you

The one for your particular specialty. Once you get a job, ask the people in your department -- such as you preceptors, unit educators, etc. which one they recommend for the type of work you will be doing.

PP is absolutely correct, especially while you are in the process of establishing your initial proficiency in a specialty area. However, I would also strongly recommend membership in your SNA/ANA and local chapter. This is the route for participating/influencing decisions about nursing practice and public policy. ANA is definitely the first one to join..as you progress through your career and decide on a specialty, then that organization is good. Like HouTx, I also have the ANA dues automatically taken from my account.
Best wishes for a long and happy career!

You can join the ANA with an online memberhsip for about $45.00. You can also ANA and NY's association at the same site. It is quite pricey though.
Thank you all for your suggestions!!

Your state nurses association along with ANA is a must for every nurse. After all your state nurses association is the place to go to find out what is happening at the legislative through the federal level that affect nursing. Together the cost is about $30 a month & you can find free CE's on the ANA site just by being a member. The $45 online ANA membership does not come with free CE's.
