What does prescribe only mean?

Published

Just wondering about scope and I see under some states is says 'Prescribe only' (SC for instance).

What does that mean and how does that affect what you are able to do?

Thanks,

I believe they mean you can only prescribe the medication. You cannot dispense it from your office.

Yes, prescribe vs prescribe and dispense...

Does that really effect practicing? Do many dispense, whether it be out of their own practice or working in an MD family practice? Just interested, and thank you so much for your insight!

I think fewer practices dispense meds nowadays as pharm reps are running tight on money so fewer samples.

When I worked in the ED I would dispense all the time. But now in the ICU I never do..

ER's are getting away from this also nowadays due to the liability associated with prescribing.

If I remember correctly dispense means for sale. Some states allow physicians to sell medications from their office. Most likely physicians can't in the state either. Sampling on the other hand usually is handled under state law. (I can't get to the DEA website from Spain but the definitions are in their just tough to find).

off-topic: David - what the heck are you doing in Spain??

I lived at Zaragoza (saragosa) air base in the 80's and had our second son at one of the downtown hospitals....loved it there!

Vacation. I had a week off and it turned out that it was cheaper to go to Spain than it was to go to Florida or Mexico. For those who haven't been, I highly recommend Barcelona.

OMG - Yep Barcelona is absolutely beautiful - we would vacation there and a little bit south at a campground called El Toro Bravo.

Our youngest was born in June 1985 and we were scheduled to leave in August 85 so we had to go to Barcelona for his passport and we just spent a week on the beach.

My husband and one of our best friends found out what au natural beaches were and we still laugh now about the pics - where I'm standing on the beach with our sons and I'm not even centered in the pic but rather off to the side. However, what IS in the pic are young ladies! lol
