Well at the hospital I work at depending on what area you are hired are put through a 6-8wk sometimes longer orientation type schedule... Like the first week they are sitting in a class doing telemetry, learning the rules of the hospitals, charting, etc... Then we you go to your floor you are assigned a nurse.. They usually let you follow them for the first shift, and may let you do skills and stuff, but basically you learn how that floor works... Then you might get one patient, with that RN watching over you and making sure you chart right, etc... Then you get a few more patients, then finally you get them all and the RN is just there to supervise you and help when needed....
I'm sure different hospitals do things different ways..
