What did you do after nursing?

Published

Hi everyone,

Has anyone here decided to change their nursing career into a different profession?

If so, what different career path did you choose and why did you leave nursing? Also, are you happier?

Good day!

I'm still in nursing but I'm working on a non-nursing degree. Another bachelors but in IT and then hopefully after I finish this degree I may get my masters in either IT or something similar. I'm very excited to get out of nursing and I work the bare minimal now and concentrating on school full-time.

I never liked nursing and when I look back I wish I would have gone for a different degree. I don't like working with people and I'm very much an introvert so I have no idea why I picked a degree that went against this. I want a job where I can sit in the corner and not talk to anyone.

I feel the same way. I'm sticking with it for now (student loans, ugh). But I know that I want to be more than just a nurse for the rest of my career life. I just don't know what yet though...

Thanks for replying, and good luck in your bachelors in IT!

Hi you must be my long lost twin. Both you and bunnynurse. I haven't found a job yet in nursing and I do want to try it out because of what bunynurse mentioned "student loans". I'm considering going back to school as well but maybe not for a degree anymore something else that's the opposite of nursing where I can sit in my cubicle and not talk to deal with people. Actually I don't mind talking to people, it's hearing them talk about me behind my back and getting spiteful comments thrown to my face for something so trivial like I'm not breathing properly..really. I'm considering going to education maybe after (no not nursing education). IT is a good job but I my eyes are not that great to be coding despite being in my 20s still. I would love to hear from what other people decide to pursue after as well.

Bunny have you thought of what you wanted to do before going into nursing?

It's always nice to know you're not alone! I'm in my 20's as well. I have thought of doing something where I can use my creativity or a profession with animals- Still figuring life out.

But yeah, definitely still try nursing. It's not an easy career, but you never know... You might surprise yourself. Take it a day at a time. On your days off, you can research career options and find something you truly love. :)

Thanks Bunny. I'd love to keep in touch with you but I don't think I can do messages yet until I hit a certain amount of post. I will be sure to message when I do though. No you're not alone! And I'm happy that I can talk with other people here that have a similar thinking to mine. I think you mentioned in your last post that you did LTC? How are you liking it so far? I want to try all sorts of nursing outside of the hospital primarily but I'm not picky. I want to see what I'm comfortable with first and if ever I feel intoxicated by work conditions, then I'll be more serious in the career switch.

Have you thought about doing something related to vet school? They have vet techs too I think those are 2 yr programs, and you'd be in an area similar to health care so you can use your past experience, knowledge and skill. I think I'm a creative person too and have always wanted to do something related to arts but I just never had a chance to think about it. Now that I'm still applying to jobs, I thought I'd have the chance to really ponder about it but I have not since I'm just concentrating on getting a job first. :(

I've known former nurses going back to school for Occupational Therapist Assistant or Physical Therapist Assistant. 2 yr program here. Pay differs by state but in mine, pay is the same or a little more than nursing. Hours typically M-F, 8am-3 pm or so. Off holidays, Usually off weekends.

Good luck!
