What do nursing schools look at?

Published

Im looking to pursue a second degree in nursing, and I was just wondering what do nursing programs generally look at during the application process. Cumulative GPA, pre-reqs only, etc. Thanks!

Specializes in Hospice.

I think they are all different. Some use a point system, some use TEAS, some count only your science GPA/pre req GPA, some allow you to take some pre reqs during the core classes in which case they are co-reqs, some require essays and recommendation letters, some don't. I would talk to the individual schools you are interested in. I think most of the requirements can be found on the individual school's websites.

I agree, they're all different. I can only speak for mine. For entrance, mine requires certain pre-reqs (and not all pre-reqs from other colleges count, they really nitpick about the content and if it doesn't match what they want, you have to take them again even if you already have a degree), prerequisites cannot be over 7 years old, CNA certification, good HESI score, GPA of at least 3.0 in all pre-reqs. You get extra "brownie points" per hours worked in the medical field - which is why I've gone ahead and finished my CNA course so that I can start working part time as a CNA while I finish up my prerequisites. Another "nitpicky" requirement of my program is that Math for Clinical Calculations cannot be taken any more than 1 year prior to the start of the program. Not acceptance into the program, not admission to the program, it cannot be over 1 year old on your first day of nursing school. That may be a difficult to time.

My advice would be to choose a few schools that interest you and go over their requirements with a fine tooth comb. If they have an informational night about their program, attend. I attended mine and it was a wealth of information, it was one of the best things I did. You could also make an appointment to meet with a counselor at various schools to determine what is right for you.

Good luck!
